The Edge is here!

The Edge is Birmingham's first dedicated live and time-based arts venue. Based in a former factory building in the heart of Birmingham's rapidly-dwindling light industrial districts, and dead handy for the city centre, The Edge exists on the edge of the city's art scene.

As well as regular live art and performance events, The Edge will be a project and exhibition space, where time-based work can be produced and presented. We are particularly keen on supporting artists wishing to access the communities present around The Edge.

Not named after the U2 guitarist, The Edge is so-called as it is geographically on the edge of the increasingly gentrified (we prefer the term to regeneration), and council invented 'creative Eastside' quarter. . The Edge is also on the edge of the arts 'scene' in the city, being concerned with presenting work that other venues are too risk-averse to consider - live art, time-based work, controversial or uncomfortable work, outsider art, art that noone else considers art- we have an open policy, but a firm curatorial hand.

Quality of work is what concerns us, not moral or ethical issues, we are interested in expanding the sum total of cultural development and are prepared to go to the edge of what may be considered acceptable to acheive this. CAVEAT - we do not mean we are attempting to shock, we consider gratuitous nudity, 'cutting up' or physically damaging work or scatological approaches not suitable for our way of working, we would rather see attempts to wake audiences up subtly, though we are prepared to show anything, if we believe the work is right for the programme.

We also wish to celebrate the culture of the 'outsider', we welcome proposals from anyone, even if their work does not fit into current art categories (perhaps especially so)

If this is the kind of work you're interested in, keep checking the news and coming soon pages for upcoming happenings, meanwhile we'll be running regular, monthly live and time-based art events - 'The Outer Edge' and 'BIFLTBA'
