The Edge

The Edge is Friction Arts headquarters and studio space, first and foremost. It's where we plot, conspire and plan, and also where we physically make our work. It's also a place for others to come and do the same. It is not a venue, although we show our own and other people's work there. It's not a community centre, though we do make it available for the community to access, use and experience artworks. It's an ad hoc, organic mish-mash of a place that we call home.

It's a long-term home for Friction, after moving on average every two years, one step ahead of the developers, we've managed to get this place for the foreseeable future. This gives us the time and space to develop our own model for the building. A genuinely artist-led space from which we hope all kinds of projects and collaborations wil spin out from. The view of the city from the roof never fails to inspire us to action, we might give you a look, if you ask nicely (and sign a disclaimer!).

We called it the Edge 'cos it is physically situated right on the edge of the 'cultural quarter' (can't help putting that in inverted commas), on the edge of the city centre and 'the edge' is where most interesting stuff tends to happen.

If you're interested in holding an event or exhibition at the Edge please contact Lee for more details.

STOP PRESS: - Building work is to begin in October, by December of this year we will be 'open for business' in a nice, new, warm and accessible space - so if you've got any ideas for events or happenings at The Edge, get in touch, and we'll see what we can do. Remember - everyone is 'extra special' at the Edge, there's no membership, we are open to all and we don't just want to show 'art for artists'!
