Past Projects

Well - this one's a toughie, over the last 16 years we have produced literally hundreds of projects, using all kinds of art forms, with all kinds of people. Whilst we prepare the toolkit for publication we will also be producing a detailed history of how we have developed these tools through direct application in our art projects.

In a large nutshell (coconut?). Friction was formed in 2004, rising pheonix-like from the ashes of our previous company, Funding Pending Live Arts. FPLA had been the vehicle for our projects for the previous 12 years, originally starting life with the touring arts venue 'Sybil Twirl's Temple of Unlikelihoods', taking live and performing arts out on the festival cicuit, with regular venues at places like Glastonbury, the Phoenix Festival, etc. We then spent a few years performing at street festivals whilst developing and honing our participatory skills, appearing as 'The Sisters of Percy' internationally, as well as touring our performance piece 'i-lands' as support for The Eels rock band. Talk about developing new audiences.

The last ten years has seen us focus on the development of the participatory side of our practice(s), particularly in raising the bar for the quality of work made outside of cultural institutions, and in the 'real' world, our gallery is all the space in the world, outside the gallery doors.
