Artist Talk: Ann Walker, Martin Clarke, Polly Hudson
Saturday 22nd September 2.00-3.00pm
Commissioned by Fracture Dance and Moving Image
‘Recently Ann Walker has begun carrying out research on sound and silence, in the spaces in-between language, developing an interest in the language of the body, of silence, movements and breaths. This investigation has links with new dance in particular in relationship to movement and touch, which seem to be more connected to our earliest primary ways of communication’.
Ann Walker references the space of language, which imposes order, draws boundaries and classifies but also seems to remain separate from the world of lived experience. She is attempting to pursue art as a means to externalise what is felt and sensed, focusing on the importance of the information that comes through the skin. At the heart of her work lies a profound desire to leave something unsaid while making it present.
About other artists’ work
Martin Clarke
Martin Clarke is a sound artist, recordist and filmmaker based in Birmingham since 2003. His work makes use of environmental material to create semi-abstract non-representational spaces where sounds are treated as though filmed, with varying depths of field and images are treated as sounds, layered and composed. Recent projects include the album slides, released on oem records, and Contos do Paiva, a short film with artist Alicja Rogalska, produced at Binauralmedia in Portugal.
Polly Hudson
Polly Hudson is a movement artist who makes performance and video works (often combining the two), that are improvised at their core. She was a student at London Contemporary Dance School and danced with their forth year company 4D, going on to study improvisation with leading figures of post-modern dance.
Polly’s work is underpinned by a long standing practice of Skinner Releasing Technique, as well as an ongoing investigation of hands-on bodywork as a resource for the creative process. Currently she is making a series of solo works that examine archetypes of image, and of the (female) body in performance.
